India Expresses Concerns Over Safety of Minorities in Bangladesh
India has raised concerns regarding the safety of Hindus in Bangladesh due to increasing violence and the release of violent extremists. The Ministry of External Affairs reiterated the Bangladeshi government’s duty to protect minority communities amidst rising tension and political unrest, with over 2,374 incidents reported recently. Calls for thorough investigations into violent acts have been made, emphasizing the need for stability and justice.
The Indian government has expressed significant concerns regarding the deteriorating security situation for minorities in Bangladesh, particularly for the Hindu community. During a recent press briefing, Randhir Jaiswal, the Spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, highlighted that there is a pressing responsibility on the Bangladeshi interim government to ensure the protection of Hindus and other minority groups, alongside their properties and places of worship.
Jaiswal noted a shocking increase in reported incidents of violence, with over 2,374 incidents occurring between August 2025 and February 2026. However, the police verified only 1,254 of these incidents, with 98 percent being classified as ‘political’ in nature. He emphasized the expected thorough investigations to hold accountable those responsible for violent acts like killings and arson.
Moreover, India’s concerns were heightened by the recent release of violent extremists previously sentenced for serious crimes, which has intensified fears about law and order in Bangladesh. Jaiswal stated, “We support a stable, peaceful, inclusive and progressive Bangladesh… We remain concerned about the deteriorating law and order situation, which has further been exacerbated by the release of violent extremists.”
The interim government led by Muhammad Yunus has faced criticism for its decisions to acquit extremist elements, especially following the abdication of the Awami League government led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The situation remains precarious for Bangladesh’s minority communities, including Hindus, amidst these developments.
The Indian government’s emphasis on the safety of minorities in Bangladesh points to significant concerns about rising violence and the release of extremists. With calls for accountability and thorough investigations, India advocates for a stable and inclusive Bangladesh where all citizens can live in peace. The situation underscores the complex political landscape that affects the welfare of minority populations.
