Torrie Lewis Sets Sights on Medal Glory at the World Athletics U20 Championships 2024

Torrie Lewis, a promising athlete representing Australia, expresses her strong aspirations for the upcoming World Athletics U20 Championships 2024, which are scheduled to take place in Lima, Peru from August 27 to August 31. The 19-year-old sprinter recently completed her inaugural Olympics by finishing seventh in the women’s 200 meters semi-finals at Paris 2024. However, her ambitions at the U20 Championships extend beyond this experience.

In reflecting on her Olympic journey, Ms. Lewis stated, “In Paris, I was one of the younger team members and I was just taking in the experience as it came. I feel like I know a little bit more of what to expect here and I have higher expectations from myself.”

Her goal is clear; she aims to secure a medal in the 200 meters, with a preference for gold. However, she has also indicated a willingness to be satisfied with achieving a personal best. Additionally, Ms. Lewis is enthusiastic about her participation in the women’s 4×100 meters relay, expressing confidence in her team, which has notably set the Australian junior record twice. This will mark her first opportunity to compete alongside this esteemed group, and she is optimistic about their potential to win a medal as well.

In the U20 Championships, Ms. Lewis is scheduled to compete in both the women’s 200 meters and the women’s 4×100 meters relay. Although she initially registered for the 100 meters event, she later opted to withdraw from that competition.

Ms. Lewis’s athletics season has been notably active. She commenced her journey at the Garry Brown Shield in Brisbane in January, progressed to her Diamond League debut in Xiamen in April, where she achieved a remarkable victory over the reigning 100 meters world champion, Sha’Carri Richardson of the United States, finishing first in the 200 meters.

Furthermore, Ms. Lewis played a pivotal role in helping the Australian women’s 4×100 meters relay team qualify for the Olympic Games in Paris at the World Relays Championships held in the Bahamas in May. Her participation in the Summer Games culminated in a personal best of 22.89 seconds in the women’s 200 meters heats before her seventh-place finish in the semi-finals.

When discussing her experience at Paris 2024, Ms. Lewis remarked, “The stadium was packed every day. Having that many people there made me more excited than nervous. The purple track in Paris was also a highlight for me. It was so different from anything I have ever run on.”

Although the Australian women’s 4×100 meters relay team did not advance to the finals at the Olympics, finishing fourth in their heat, Ms. Lewis remains focused on her forthcoming competitions. As she prepares for the World Athletics U20 Championships, her enthusiasm and commitment to excellence position her as a formidable contender on the international athletics stage.
