Rubio Engages in U.S.-Ukraine Talks in Saudi Arabia Amid Ongoing Conflict

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will visit Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, for U.S.-Ukraine talks aimed at facilitating peace amid ongoing Russian aggression. He will meet with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to strengthen bilateral ties. Ukrainian officials are set to join discussions, focusing on establishing a framework for peace and addressing shared regional interests. Following Saudi Arabia, Rubio will attend the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting in Canada.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to arrive in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Monday for discussions concerning U.S.-Ukraine relations amid ongoing efforts by President Donald Trump to facilitate an end to the conflict with Russia. This visit comes despite recent escalations in Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructures.

During his stay, Rubio is expected to meet with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud to strengthen bilateral relations and address mutual interests. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce highlighted the significance of these discussions.

In communications with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Rubio reiterated President Trump’s commitment to achieving a rapid resolution to the war, emphasizing the necessity for all parties involved to pursue a sustainable peace.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is also scheduled to visit Saudi Arabia for talks with the Crown Prince but may miss the discussions with U.S. officials on Tuesday. A Ukrainian delegation, led by Chief of Staff Andriy Yermak, will participate in the talks along with Minister Sybiha, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, and Military Commander Pavlo Palisa.

Rubio and National Security Adviser Mike Waltz will engage with Ukrainian officials in Jeddah. A State Department official noted that the high-level presence of Ukrainian officials signifies a readiness to engage in constructive dialogue.

The negotiations aim to establish a framework for a peace agreement and an initial ceasefire. These discussions follow a previous meeting between senior U.S. and Russian officials in Riyadh earlier this month.

Ukraine has expressed its commitment to constructive dialogue with the United States, with President Zelenskyy stressing that the country has sought peace since the onset of the war and that effective proposals are available for consideration. He urged a swift progression toward an agreement through his recent post on X.

Following the Saudi talks, Rubio is set to attend the Group of Seven (G7) foreign ministers’ meeting in Charlevoix, Canada, from March 12 to 14. The G7 ministers have underscored their dedication to achieving lasting peace in Ukraine and have called for robust security guarantees.

In conclusion, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s trip to Saudi Arabia marks a significant diplomatic effort to address the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The scheduled discussions aim to solidify U.S.-Ukraine relations while promoting peace initiatives. Success in these talks could pave the way for a ceasefire and ultimately, a more durable resolution to the conflict, reflecting the collective commitment of the international community, especially as underscored by the G7 foreign ministers’ recent statements.
