Trump Officials Conduct Diplomatic Meetings with Russia and Ukraine in Saudi Arabia
Top Trump administration officials will hold separate meetings with Russian and Ukrainian representatives in Saudi Arabia this week. Scheduled discussions follow prior diplomatic engagements that proposed a three-step peace plan involving a ceasefire, elections, and a final agreement. Tensions have arisen from previous discussions but efforts are ongoing towards mending US-Ukraine relations, including potential sanctions against Russia.
Top officials from the Trump administration are set to convene separate discussions with representatives from Russia and Ukraine in Saudi Arabia this week, as reported by CNN on March 9. Former President Trump remarked, “Big meetings coming up, as you know, in Saudi Arabia. That’s going to include Russia, but Ukraine, we’ll see if we can get something done” during comments made aboard Air Force One.
These upcoming meetings will be in continuation of prior efforts, including a previous US-Russian meeting held on February 18, during which a three-step peace plan was proposed. This plan outlined immediate objectives: initiating a ceasefire, conducting elections in Ukraine, followed by establishing a final agreement.
The latest talks also follow a contentious Oval Office meeting from last month, involving Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The discussion was marked by criticism from Trump and Vance towards Zelensky regarding the conflict, while Zelensky sought clarification on security assurances and previous agreements with Russia. Efforts are ongoing to mend US-Ukraine relations after the diplomatic tensions.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to meet with Ukrainian representatives in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, prior to this engagement, the Ukrainian delegation is scheduled to confer with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Riyadh, as reported by Radio Free Europe.
US Special Envoy Keith Kellogg previously remarked on the effects of American pressure on Ukraine, likening it to “hitting a mule with a board on the nose – you got their attention,” suggesting that halting military aid was a tactic to encourage negotiations. Trump has also indicated a potential shift in strategy towards Russia, mentioning on Truth Social his considerations of substantial banking sanctions and tariffs until a ceasefire and final peace agreement is achieved.
On March 10, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova confirmed that no US-Russia meetings are planned for the current week, adding another layer of complexity to the situation.
The upcoming meetings in Saudi Arabia exemplify ongoing diplomatic efforts by top Trump administration officials to address the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. These discussions follow previous engagements that have been marked by tension and differing perspectives. The involvement of prominent officials, along with proposed sanctions on Russia, signifies the United States’ attempt to navigate the complicated geopolitical landscape. Continued dialogue is essential for establishing peace and restoring relationships in this context.
