Anticipation Builds for Paris 2024 Paralympics as Para Athletics Stars Discuss Their Aspirations

In anticipation of the much-awaited Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, outstanding Para athletics competitors gathered on August 27, 2024, for a pre-Games press conference held at the esteemed Stade de France. Among the distinguished athletes present were Germany’s legendary long jumper Markus Rehm, USA sprinter Hunter Woodhall, Moroccan thrower Youssra Karim, and Brazilian sprinter Jerusa Geber, who is accompanied by her guide Gabriel Garcia.

The forthcoming Paralympic Games promise to showcase extraordinary talent, with 1,134 athletes representing 151 National Paralympic Committees competing in 164 medal events at one of the world’s iconic venues.

Markus Rehm, a four-time Paralympic champion, conveyed his determination to defend his titles in Paris while acknowledging the growing competition he will face. “My goal is certainly to secure the gold medal, having previously won four throughout my career,” stated Mr. Rehm. The 36-year-old athlete, renowned for his remarkable achievements with nine World Championship titles to his name, is aware of the challenges posed by emerging competitors, stating, “There are two formidable athletes from the United States vying for my title, which adds excitement to the forthcoming events.”

Hunter Woodhall, a three-time Paralympic medallist and T62 sprinter, expressed his intent to approach the competition without expectations, aiming instead to relish the moment within the vibrant atmosphere of the Stade de France. “This year has been exceptional in terms of training and performance. I am eager to experience the enthusiastic crowd at the Paris 2024 Games,” Mr. Woodhall remarked, recalling how he was inspired by the successful performance of his wife, Tara Davis-Woodhall, during the Olympic Games.

Jerusa Geber, a seasoned veteran in the world of Para athletics, is poised to secure her first Paralympic gold medal in Paris. The 42-year-old athlete, who has garnered multiple medals in past competitions, shared her aspirations, stating, “This is my fifth Paralympic Games, and I am resolute in my determination to finally achieve the gold medal that has eluded me thus far. My previous performances have placed me among the best, and I am hopeful for a breakthrough in Paris.”

Youssra Karim, a promising competitor in the women’s shot put F41 category, is keen to convert her recent successes into a gold medal at the upcoming Games. “After winning a silver medal in Tokyo and a gold at the world championships in Kobe, I am aiming for nothing less than gold in Paris. It would mean the world to me to have the support of the Moroccan community during these Games, as it can greatly influence my performance,” Ms. Karim stated.
