Bangladesh’s Strategic Opportunity under Trump’s Trade Policy
During a recent discussion hosted by the IBFB, speakers asserted that Bangladesh can leverage Trump’s trade policy to advance its economic interests. They observed that unlike many other nations, Bangladesh faces no added tariffs in accessing the U.S. market. The forum emphasized the importance of reforms in fostering U.S.-Bangladesh partnerships in trade.
A discussion meeting held on Monday focused on how Bangladesh could benefit from U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade policy. Speakers emphasized that while other nations face increased tariffs to access the U.S. market, Bangladesh remains fortunate as there are currently no plans for such tariffs against it. The event, titled ‘America-Bangladesh Relations in the Trump Era,’ was organized by the International Business Forum of Bangladesh (IBFB) in Dhaka.
Notable figures at the discussion included William B. Milam, a former U.S. ambassador to Bangladesh, Jon F. Danilowicz, executive director of Right to Freedom, Dr. Asif M Shahan from the University of Dhaka, and Ambassador Humayun Kabir of the Bangladesh Enterprise Institute. The forum was presided over by Lufunnisa Saudia Khan, IBFB president, and attended by former diplomats, academics, and trade experts.
Milam, who has known Bangladesh for over four decades, noted that while the U.S. invests in various sectors, including energy, there has been a lack of partnership development over the past 15 years. He advocated for reforms and a sustainable democratic process as essential for fostering partnerships with U.S. businesses and government.
Danilowicz highlighted the significance of fostering business-to-business connections between the U.S. and Bangladesh for boosting trade and investment. He reassured that U.S. Indo-Pacific policies and related issues would not impede Bangladesh’s growth but rather provide opportunities for stronger collaboration.
The speakers referred to the discussion as timely and substantial, given the historical strategic partnership between the U.S. and Bangladesh in trade and development. They emphasized the need for proactive adaptation to ensure strengthened trade ties amidst evolving U.S. policies, with the IBFB positioned as a non-partisan advocate for business improvements in Bangladesh.
In conclusion, the speakers at the IBFB discussion posited that Bangladesh holds a unique advantage under President Trump’s trade policy, with no tariffs currently imposed. They urged the necessity for reforms to strengthen partnerships with U.S. businesses while emphasizing the ongoing importance of U.S.-Bangladesh relations in trade and investment. Proactive approaches to adapting to U.S. policy changes were deemed essential for maintaining this strategic alliance.
