U.S. and Ukrainian officials commenced discussions in Saudi Arabia aimed at finding a resolution to the ongoing conflict with Russia. According to Reuters, these talks initiated on Tuesday, with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasizing their significance in understanding Ukraine’s willingness to make necessary concessions for peace. He stated the necessity of grasping Ukraine’s position toward potential compromises to facilitate a ceasefire.
Joining Secretary Rubio in the discussions is National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, while the Ukrainian contingent is led by Andriy Yermak, a close aide of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. However, President Zelenskyy himself, who had met with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman the day before, will not attend the dialogues.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry affirmed the commencement of the U.S.-Ukrainian delegation meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, sharing a video of senior Ukrainian officials entering the meeting location. Additionally, Steve Witkoff, former special envoy for the Middle East under President Trump, expressed optimism regarding a forthcoming minerals agreement between the United States and Ukraine before the negotiating discussions began.
In conclusion, the U.S. and Ukrainian officials have initiated crucial talks in Saudi Arabia, focusing on achieving peace in the conflict with Russia. The discussions’ success relies on assessing Ukraine’s readiness to make concessions, as highlighted by Secretary Rubio. The absence of President Zelenskyy from the talks indicates a strategic approach where primary aides are entrusted with negotiations, while prospects for a minerals deal between the U.S. and Ukraine remain hopeful.
