“Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Points Finger at Former Georgian Government for 2008 War”
The recent statement made by Maria Zakharova, the spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, places blame on the former Georgian government for the 2008 war with Georgia. Zakharova’s comment accuses the then-Georgian UNM government and then-President Mikheil Saakashvili of initiating the conflict by breaching international agreements on the peaceful settlement of the Georgian-Ossetian conflict and launching a full-scale military operation against South Ossetia.
Zakharova labeled President Mikheil Saakashvili’s actions as a “criminal adventure” that left Russia with no choice but to conduct an operation to force the aggressor to peace. She further stated that this led to the recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent states, ensuring the rights of the people living there to preserve their national identity.
The spokeswoman also emphasized the importance of maintaining relative calm on the borders of the three states through the Geneva International Discussions established after the war. Zakharova called for greater effort from the participants in the discussions to conclude a non-use of force agreement between Tbilisi, Sokhumi, and Tskhinvali.
Furthermore, she highlighted the significance of starting the delimitation of state borders and subsequent demarcation processes between Tbilisi, Sokhumi, and Tskhinvali in order to stabilize the situation in the region.
Zakharova also criticized the United States and its allies, accusing them of escalating inter-regional contradictions to provoke tensions near Russian borders and ignoring the interests of the states in the region.
In conclusion, Russia expresses its readiness to continue its interaction with those concerned about the destiny of the South Caucasus, including providing all-round assistance in developing a dialogue between Tbilisi, Sokhumi, and Tskhinvali.
While it is clear that Russia continues to hold the former Georgian government responsible for the 2008 war, it is important to consider the perspectives of all parties involved in order to achieve a peaceful resolution and stability in the region. The accusations and blame game only serve to further strain the already delicate situation.
