PR Sreejesh, an esteemed hockey player, and Manu Bhaker, an accomplished shooter, have been appointed as joint flag-bearers for the Closing Ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics, set for August 11. The announcement followed the addition of PR Sreejesh after India’s men’s hockey team secured their second consecutive Olympic bronze medal, highlighting his exceptional contribution to the sport.
Sreejesh expressed his profound gratitude, stating, “Carrying the flag for India alongside Manu Bhaker at the Closing Ceremony of the Paris Olympics is an indescribable honour.” He emphasized the significance of the Olympics as the pinnacle of sports and acknowledged the privilege of representing India.
Dr. PT Usha, President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), noted that Sreejesh was a popular choice due to his extensive dedicated service over two decades to Indian hockey and sports in general. Following his retirement after the bronze medal win in Paris, Sreejesh’s legacy in Indian sports is solidified.
The IOA had contemplated naming Neeraj Chopra as a flag-bearer as well, but Raj Usha confirmed that Chopra himself recommended Sreejesh for the role. Usha remarked, “I appreciate the spontaneity and grace with which he agreed that Sreejesh should be the flag-bearer at the Closing Ceremony.”
Manu Bhaker, at the age of 23, has made a remarkable achievement by winning two medals at Paris 2024, joining PV Sindhu as the only Indian woman to attain such success at the Olympics. Previously, wrestler Bajrang Punia served as India’s flag-bearer during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Closing Ceremony. Notably, Sreejesh also held the honor of flag-bearer at the Asian Games Closing Ceremony where the Indian men’s hockey team secured the gold medal.
In conclusion, Manu Bhaker and PR Sreejesh will jointly represent India as flag-bearers at the closing ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics, an honor demonstrating their remarkable achievements in their respective sports. Their selection reflects not only personal accomplishments but also the deep respect they hold within the sporting community, as echoed by Neeraj Chopra’s recommendation. Sreejesh’s legacy in Indian hockey is further highlighted by his service and dedication over two decades, culminating in this prestigious moment.
