The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh has taken action against Mohammad Harun Al Rashid, the former Ambassador to Morocco, for a critical Facebook post regarding the interim government. Harun was recalled to Dhaka on December 11, 2024, but delayed his return, eventually relinquishing his position on February 27, 2025. He subsequently relocated from Rabat, Morocco to Ottawa, Canada, further delaying his travel back to Bangladesh.
On March 6, 2025, Harun was expected to return to Dhaka but failed to do so. In a Facebook post titled “A Plea for Bangladesh-and for Myself Subject: Bangladesh’s Descent into Anarchy under Yunus-The World’s Silence is painful,” he expressed discontent with the interim government’s management. The Ministry has criticized his remarks, asserting that he misrepresented the reality in Bangladesh, particularly concerning Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.
The Ministry described Harun’s statements as “totally unacceptable” and noted that they distorted the factual conditions in Bangladesh. The Ministry’s press release indicated concerns over what appears to be a hidden motive behind Harun’s remarks, suggesting that he projects himself as a ‘persecuted diplomat’ to garner sympathy abroad.
As a response, the Ministry has begun taking measures, including the revocation of Harun’s and his family’s passports. Furthermore, they will pursue appropriate departmental proceedings against him, emphasizing their intolerance for such behavior among their officials.
In conclusion, the actions taken against former Ambassador Harun Al Rashid underscore the Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ commitment to maintaining decorum among its diplomats. The Ministry’s response highlights the importance of accurate representation of the nation’s leadership and affairs, reaffirming their stance against any conduct that may undermine the country’s diplomatic integrity. Such measures are aimed at safeguarding the image and credibility of the government and its representatives.
