To reach this demographic, the country has ventured into luxury advertising, recently hosting social media influencers at an upscale Michelin-starred restaurant in New York’s Greenwich Village. This initiative seeks to promote natural diamonds over lab-grown alternatives, particularly targeting affluent individuals in their 20s and 30s.

Botswana’s Mines Minister, Bogolo Kenewendo, emphasized the strategy to counter synthetic diamonds, which have adversely affected the country’s diamond revenues. The nation relies heavily on diamond sales, with the Debswana joint venture between De Beers and Botswana experiencing a 46% decline in sales last year, as noted by the central bank. Amidst the competition from synthetic options, Botswana is committed to showcasing the advantages of its natural gems.

In a bid to distinguish itself, Botswana promotes its democratic governance and the substantial benefits derived from diamond sales, which have funded education for nearly all citizens since independence in 1966. Kenewendo reiterated, “Diamonds do good. That is our selling point,” reinforcing the societal impact of the industry on its population.

With a new cabinet comprising youthful leaders, including a 26-year-old youth minister, the country is focusing on rejuvenating its economy. Responding to voter discontent, the recent election led to the rise of President Duma Boko’s Umbrella for Democratic Change, which has shifted the political landscape after decades of a single-party rule. The focus is now to attract buyers interested in more luxurious jewelry at prices exceeding $750, utilizing blockchain technology to ensure the traceability of their diamonds.

Collaborating with luxury retailers like The Clear Cut, Botswana aims to cater to clients with higher budgets, typically ranging from $25,000 to $30,000 for engagement rings. Their target market usually comprises customers in their late 20s and early 30s. Olivia Landau, co-founder of The Clear Cut, stated that the goal is to create a new narrative about the appeal of Botswana’s diamonds, enabling influencers to educate their audiences about the unique qualities of these gems, thereby enriching their understanding.
