In southern Taiwan, marathon organizers, including Legislator Hsu Chi-chieh from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, issued an apology for awarding trophies shaped like a Chinese machine gun. The trophies featured the Chinese QBZ-95 design, and the organizers described it as an unintended error. Winners will be given an option to select alternative trophies.

The incident occurred amid sensitive political tensions, as China claims Taiwan as its territory and threatens military action for unification. President William Lai Ching-te highlighted Taiwan’s position, referring to mainland China as a “foreign hostile force” and announced measures to counteract Chinese influence in social, media, and military domains.

The Fengshan Marathon route, which included significant military installations, added to the embarrassment surrounding the event. The Fengshan Road Running Association offered its apologies but gave no explanation for the choice of a weapon related to China’s forces. The Defense Ministry clarified that while it provided facilities for the event, it had no role in the race’s organization or trophy selection.

Compulsory military service in Taiwan, now extended to one year, familiarizes all Taiwanese males with army weaponry, raising questions about awareness surrounding such sensitive symbols.
