Rajnath Singh and Tulsi Gabbard Collaborate to Strengthen India-US Defence Ties

On Monday, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard engaged in discussions aimed at enhancing collaboration in the defence sector, focusing on advanced technologies and innovative strategies. Both leaders reiterated their commitment to strengthening India-US ties by improving interoperability and integrating defence industrial supply chains. This dialogue reflects a mutual dedication to advancing strategic interests in a range of defence domains including land, air, maritime, and space.
During her visit, Gabbard participated in a global meeting of security officials and attended the Raisina Dialogue, marking her as the first senior official from the Trump administration to visit India. Singh expressed satisfaction following their discussions, highlighting a broad range of issues including defence and information exchange. Their meeting underscored that strategic security is crucial to the cooperative framework between the two nations.
Reviewing past discussions, in February, Singh and his US counterpart Pete Hegseth evaluated current defence cooperation while seeking avenues for expansion. Progress has been noted under the US-India Defence Industrial Cooperation Roadmap, which promotes joint production in key military areas and innovative technologies.
Since adopting the Roadmap in 2023, both countries have advanced cooperation related to co-production of critical systems like jet engines and munitions. Notably, India finalized a deal worth $3.5 billion with the US for 31 MQ-9B drones to enhance defence capabilities, particularly concerning Chinese threats. This agreement culminated after extensive deliberations over eight years, involving negotiations with successive US administrations.
In addition, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is in talks with GE Aerospace for the joint production of F414 engines, crucial for India’s LCA Mk-2 programme. This partnership aims to bridge significant technology gaps and may set the stage for future exports. Singh’s meeting with Gabbard occurred shortly after Trump announced plans to equip India with F-35 stealth fighters, signaling a strategic shift in military partnerships, although Indian Air Force leadership has noted that no offers have been made yet regarding the F-35.
