Bangladesh’s Foreign Adviser Engages with US Senator on Bilateral Relations

During a meeting with US Senator Gary C. Peters, Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain expressed concerns over misinformation about Bangladesh. The discussion covered bilateral relations, the Rohingya crisis, and preparations for upcoming elections, with both parties reinforcing their commitment to enhancing US-Bangladesh cooperation.

On Tuesday, the Foreign Affairs Adviser of Bangladesh, Md Touhid Hossain, met with US Senator Gary C. Peters to address the dissemination of false information regarding Bangladesh by various parties at home and abroad. The Adviser requested that the Senator portray the true state of affairs in Bangladesh to aid in combating this misinformation. Senator Peters acknowledged the request during the courtesy meeting held at the State Guest House ‘Padma’ with other dignitaries in attendance, including the US CDA to Bangladesh, Ambassador Tracey Ann Jacobson.

The discussions encompassed essential aspects of bilateral relations such as trade, investment, and development cooperation. Adviser Hossain welcomed Senator Peters and expressed gratitude for his inaugural visit to Bangladesh. He informed the Senator of the ongoing reform initiatives led by prominent figures like Dr. Yunus and emphasized the preparations for a “free, fair, and participatory” election.

During the meeting, both officials discussed the need for enhanced cooperation in areas such as trade relations, technological exchanges, and security. Additionally, the Foreign Adviser brought attention to the challenges faced by Bangladesh in accommodating forcibly displaced Rohingyas and stressed the urgency of their sustainable repatriation to Myanmar. He sought the support of the United States in partnership for an upcoming international conference focused on the Rohingya crisis in New York.

Senator Peters commended Bangladesh’s humanitarian efforts and expressed US support for the repatriation of Rohingyas, while also recognizing the valuable contributions of the Bangladeshi community in his home state of Michigan. He reiterated the importance of reinforcing collaboration to tackle shared challenges, such as climate change. The meeting ended on a positive note, with both sides pledging to strengthen the Bangladesh-U.S. partnership and explore new cooperation opportunities, followed by an iftar and dinner event.
