Shashi Tharoor Reflects on India’s Position in Russia-Ukraine War
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor acknowledged his prior criticism of India’s stance on the Russia-Ukraine war, expressing regret for opposing the policy. He stated that India’s current diplomatic efforts position it uniquely to foster peace and noted a potential readiness to participate in future peacekeeping missions, depending on the situation’s development.
Shashi Tharoor, a Congress leader, acknowledged feeling embarrassed for opposing India’s initial stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He stated that India’s current foreign policy enables it to contribute significantly toward achieving lasting peace. During the Raisina Dialogue, Mr. Tharoor reflected on his earlier criticisms of India’s position when the war began, emphasizing the need for condemnation of the aggression against Ukraine.
The former minister of state for external affairs expressed, “I am still wiping the egg of my face… I actually criticised the Indian position at the time back in February 2022.” He argued that India had a responsibility to uphold the UN charter and condemn violations of sovereignty, particularly in light of Russia’s actions against Ukraine.
Mr. Tharoor further noted that India’s diplomatic relations now allow it to engage with both Ukraine and Russia effectively. He indicated that India is well-positioned to help foster peace, given its geographical distance from Europe and a unique diplomatic standing.
Although he cannot officially represent the government’s views as an opposition member, Mr. Tharoor hinted at the possibility of India sending peacekeepers if a consensus peace between Russia and Ukraine were reached, noting a previous resolution against deploying troops to Iraq.
Mr. Tharoor commented, “I don’t see that happening for Ukraine… if it were necessary and there was an agreed peace, I think there would be some willingness to consider.” He concluded by highlighting India’s strong commitment to global stability, evidenced by its participation in over 49 peacekeeping missions.
