During a meeting with Japanese reporters in Brasilia, President Lula highlighted the significant role that Japanese science and technology could play in addressing climate-related challenges. The COP30 event is set to take place in November in Belem, located near the Amazon river’s mouth in northern Brazil.

This year marks a significant milestone, as it celebrates the 130th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Brazil. Lula is scheduled to make a state visit to Japan four days beginning Monday to further enhance ties between the nations. He noted that the current trade volume between Brazil and Japan is insufficient, advocating for an increase in trade that includes the importation of Brazilian beef, which Japan currently restricts.

Currently, Brazil’s trade with Japan is approximately 12 billion dollars annually, which constitutes less than 10% of its trade volume with China. President Lula also criticized former U.S. President Donald Trump’s foreign policy, notably concerning plans related to the Panama Canal and the withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, an international initiative aiming to combat climate change, which Lula termed detrimental to global efforts.
