Bangladesh’s Longest Railway Bridge, Jamuna Railway Bridge, Opens to Traffic

Bangladesh has inaugurated the Jamuna Railway Bridge, its longest railway bridge at 4.8 km, enhancing railway communication. It will support high-speed transit for at least 88 trains and has been constructed with state-of-the-art technology for 100 years of durability. This development follows a 2020 government decision to improve railway infrastructure.

On March 19, Bangladesh celebrated the official opening of its longest railway bridge, the Jamuna Railway Bridge, which spans 4.8 kilometers. This significant infrastructure serves to enhance railway communication across the country, as demonstrated by a special train that was the first to traverse the bridge. Bangladesh Railways Director General Md Afzal Hossain announced that this new bridge will enable at least 88 trains to travel at higher speeds without interruptions.

Constructed using state-of-the-art steel technology, the bridge is built on 50 pillars and features 49 spans, ensuring a durability of 100 years. Previously, since the inauguration of the Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge in 1998, railway traffic involved 38 trains crossing the bridge daily at slower speeds, connecting Dhaka to various regions including the northern, northwestern, southern, and southwestern areas.

The decision to construct a dedicated railway bridge was made by the Bangladeshi government in 2020, and the foundation stone was laid on November 29 of that year. Although the Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge has a parallel railway track, it primarily served road traffic, making the new railway bridge an essential upgrade for train connectivity.

The inauguration of the Jamuna Railway Bridge marks a transformative development for Bangladesh’s railway infrastructure, significantly improving speed and efficiency for train travel across the nation. Built with advanced technology, the bridge promises to sustain operations for the next century, enhancing connectivity between major regions. As Bangladesh continues to invest in its railway sector, this bridge serves as a pivotal milestone in modernizing its transportation network.
