The opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Paralympics took place on Wednesday at the iconic Place de la Concorde, centrally located in Paris. In the aftermath of this remarkable event, the creators of the ceremony convened a press conference with representatives from the International Paralympic Committee to discuss the highlights of the occasion.

In a reflection of the excitement permeating French society, it was noted that 22 million viewers tuned in to witness the Para athletes parade through Place de la Concorde and the illustrious Champs-Elysées. Thierry Reboul, the Director of Ceremonies for Paris 2024, remarked, “French people are really looking forward to seeing the Paralympics because they want to keep the party going. We wanted to keep this strong introduction to create another spark.”

The enthusiastic response was further evidenced by the sale of approximately 100,000 tickets, culminating in a staggering total of 2.1 million occupied seats. Craig Spence, the Chief Brand and Communications Officer for the International Paralympic Committee, recounted how Alexander Ekman, the project’s director, conducted extensive research alongside Para athletes to ensure their contributions were integral to the ceremony. “The goal was to stop with the heroizing stereotype,” articulated artistic director Thomas Jolly.

Mr. Ekman expressed his satisfaction, stating, “I was very happy to be able to show my work to so many people. It was just beautiful to see everybody working for the same cause.” Among the attendees was John McFall, a flag bearer for the Paralympics who shared his inspiring journey. A former medalist in the Beijing 100m in 2008, Mr. McFall has since pursued a degree in surgery and is currently training with the European Space Agency to become the first Para astronaut. He emphasized the significance of the Paralympic legacy, stating, “Carrying that flag was just playing my part in delivering this inclusive message and this heritage.”

Furthermore, Mr. Spence addressed the absence of the Zambian flag during the ceremony, explaining, “We did not receive any information regarding Zambia’s travel situation, leading us to believe they would not be attending. However, they have since forwarded their plane tickets this morning, indicating they will participate.”
