Ukraine will not join the upcoming US-Russia talks in Saudi Arabia, focusing instead on gaining insights from President Trump’s discussions with President Zelenskyy. The US and Russia are to negotiate a ceasefire, despite prior misunderstandings and tensions in relations. The Presidential Office of Ukraine has confirmed that a Ukrainian delegation will not attend the forthcoming US-Russia negotiations set for March 23 in Saudi Arabia. Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser in the office, stated that the discussions will be exclusively between the US and Russia, thus Ukraine will not be participating at this time.

Podolyak highlighted the significance of waiting for the outcome of the conversation between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy before determining any future Ukrainian involvement in negotiations. He emphasized the desire for a comprehensive understanding of Trump’s discussion with Putin, asserting, “The president wants to understand the contents of this call fully from Trump.”

Reflecting on a prior meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy at the White House, Podolyak noted that it was emotionally charged and revealed many underlying contradictions. He stated, “It was a fairly emotional conversation in the Oval Office, and it showed that contradictions had built up,” which may have impacted the current negotiations.

The upcoming US-Russia talks aim to address a ceasefire in Ukraine, as announced by US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz. He mentioned that he and Russian National Security Advisor Yuri Ushakov have agreed to meet in Riyadh to discuss the expansion of a partial ceasefire previously secured by Trump.

Despite the ongoing dialogue, the Kremlin has reportedly declined Washington’s offer for a comprehensive ceasefire, imposing unrealistic conditions. However, it appears that an agreement was reached to refrain from attacking Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
