MG Unveils New Generation MG4 Hatchback in China

The new MG4 all-electric hatchback has been unveiled in China, featuring a significantly larger design than its predecessor and various enhancements. Notably, MG has struggled with MG4 sales in China but maintains better performance in international markets. The new model is built with a more powerful motor and a revamped aesthetic, although it has yet to gain substantial traction against its competitors.

The new MG4 all-electric hatchback has recently been revealed in China, presenting a fresh design that marks a significant departure from its predecessor. This larger model comes amidst notably low sales figures for the current MG4, suggesting a potential fresh start for the entry-level electric vehicle (EV) market for MG.

MG, once a British automaker, has been under the ownership of state-owned SAIC Motor since 2005. While the brand struggles to gain traction in the Chinese EV market, its models perform relatively well in international regions such as India, Thailand, and the European Union.

The latest MG4 hatchback measures 4395 mm in length, 1842 mm in width, and 1551 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm. In comparison, the previous model’s dimensions were 4287 mm in length, 1836 mm in width, and 1516 mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,705 mm, highlighting the new model’s more substantial size.

The redesigned MG4 features new front and rear ends, alongside modified doors and a revamped greenhouse structure. The aesthetic resembles an enlarged MG3 model, infused with stylistic elements reminiscent of the MG Cyberster. Additionally, its rear showcases a prominent light strip and arrow-shaped lights inspired by the Cyberster.

Under the hood, the MG4 is equipped with a TZ180XS1001 electric motor that delivers a peak output of 120 kW and achieves a top speed of 160 km/h, weighing in at 1,485 kg. In contrast, the existing MG4 offers a slightly stronger 125 kW motor but comes with an increased weight of 1,641 kg.

This model utilizes a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery supplied by Rept Battero Energy, though the specific capacity details remain undisclosed. The information regarding the MG4 was provided by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) in China, which plays a crucial role in the vehicle approval process.

Interestingly, MG has sought additional badges for this model, including MG3 and E5, possibly indicating uncertainties regarding the final nomenclature or a strategy to create intrigue about the vehicle.

Despite its introduction, the MG4 has not fared well in the competitive Chinese EV market. After a promising start in mid-2022, sales dwindled, particularly evident in February when only 13 units were sold against strong competition from models like BYD Dolphin and Wuling Bingo. In that same month, the MG brand recorded 7,002 total vehicle sales, primarily driven by its MG5 and MG7 internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, which significantly outperformed the MG4 in sales figures.
