Hampton Morris, a 20-year-old American weightlifter from Marietta, Georgia, is poised to compete in the Paris 2024 Olympics. Known as “Hamp the Champ” and “Champton,” he aims to secure victory in the men’s 61kg weight class, where he currently ranks second behind China’s defending gold medalist, Li Fabin.
Morris achieved a historic milestone on April 2 at the 2024 IWF World Cup in Phuket, Thailand, by setting a new world record with a 176 kg (388 lbs) clean and jerk, surpassing the previous record held by Li. Although he earned gold in the clean and jerk category, he finished second overall, as Li secured the title by setting a new snatch world record of 146 kg (321.8 lbs).
Morris’ journey into weightlifting began at a young age, inspired by his father, Tripp. Initially play-acting as a weightlifter, he formalized his training under his father’s guidance in a home gym. At just 14, he made his international debut, winning two bronze medals at the 2018 Pan American Youth Championships and has since garnered numerous accolades including 20 gold medals and 10 junior and senior world records.
In addition to his weightlifting endeavors, Morris has a passion for coffee, fostered by his mother, Anne Marie. He fondly recalls childhood moments of pretending to enjoy coffee with her. His travels for competitions have enabled him to explore coffee shops worldwide, notably in Thailand. Morris owns five coffee makers and enjoys coffee as part of his pre-workout routine, with aspirations to experience the renowned cafés of Paris during the Olympics.
Hampton Morris’s impressive rise in weightlifting, marked by a world record and a passion for the sport, positions him as a strong contender for a medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics. His unique background, combined with personal interests like coffee, adds depth to his athletic profile. With the Olympic stage ahead, Morris aims to leverage his training successes to challenge the reigning champions and potentially claim gold for Team USA.
