Botswana’s Chinese Learners Engage with Language and Culture through Martial Arts
The Confucius Institute at the University of Botswana hosted an event for Chinese learners, focusing on language practice and traditional martial arts. On March 21, 2025, the Confucius Institute at the University of Botswana in Gaborone hosted a cultural and language event aimed at Chinese learners. The event provided participants with an opportunity to practice the Chinese language while engaging in traditional martial arts. The theme, “Chinese Gongfu,” focused on the vocabulary related to martial weapons, such as knives and swords, and included demonstrations of basic martial arts movements.
Attending the event, Keagile Sebetlela introduced himself in Chinese, expressing his motivation for learning the language due to its global significance. He also conveyed his appreciation for writing Chinese characters, highlighting their uniqueness compared to alphabet-based languages. Similarly, students Sharon Khumomotse and Lindiwe Lile Ramooki showcased their language proficiency by performing tongue twisters in Chinese.
Fidelity Monthe, who is building a business and has traveled to China, emphasized the necessity of learning Chinese for effective communication. She articulated her passion for Chinese characters, likening writing to an artistic endeavor. Monthe underscored the importance of conversing with native speakers to further understand Chinese culture.
Approximately 70 learners and educators engaged in various activities during the two-hour event, which included performances of Chinese songs, language games, and group discussions. Pu Durong, the Chinese director of CIUB, compared the gathering to “English corners” in China, noting a growing enthusiasm among students to learn the language for business opportunities in China.
The Confucius Institute at the University of Botswana, the first of its kind in the nation, was established to promote Chinese language and culture, followed by the launch of a second institute in October 2023 at the Botswana International University of Science and Technology.
