Postponement of Paris 2024 Paralympics Triathlon Due to Water Quality Concerns

The Para-triathlon events scheduled for the Paris 2024 Paralympics have been officially postponed by one day due to concerns regarding the quality of the water in the River Seine. Originally set to occur on Sunday, heavy rainfall in the Paris region has adversely affected the water conditions, prompting World Triathlon to announce the postponement shortly before the competitions were to commence.

Following rigorous testing conducted at approximately 02:30 BST on Sunday, it was determined that the water quality levels were below acceptable thresholds for swimming, thereby rendering it unsuitable for athletes. Consequently, all 11 medal events in the Para-triathlon category will now take place on Monday, this rescheduling being contingent upon favorable water test results beforehand.

This setback marks yet another challenge for the organizers of the Paris 2024 Games, as the events in the River Seine have faced multiple disruptions. Previously, the Olympic triathlon faced delays due to inclement weather earlier in the Games. Initially, the Para-triathlon was intended to be conducted over two days, but was later amended to a single-day event to mitigate anticipated weather-related issues.

World Triathlon has reaffirmed its commitment to prioritizing the health and safety of all participants, and thus, it became necessary to postpone the event. Among the competitors is Great Britain’s team, which consists of 11 athletes competing across seven triathlon events. Noteworthy participants include Lauren Steadman, the reigning PTS5 women’s Paralympic champion, who seeks to retain her title against teammate Claire Cashmore. Additionally, Dave Ellis, a world, European, and Commonwealth champion in the men’s PTV, aims to secure his first Paralympic gold, while Alison Peasgood, a silver medalist from Rio 2016, aspires to achieve greater success in the women’s PTV event.

In conclusion, the decision to postpone the Para-triathlon events reflects a stringent commitment to athlete safety, and further updates will be provided pending additional water quality assessments.
