Philippine Military Expresses Strong Disapproval of China’s Air Force Actions in South China Sea
The Philippine military has expressed grave concern and disapproval of the perilous and provocative actions undertaken by the Chinese air force at the contested Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea. This incident marks the first occasion in which the Philippines has lodged a complaint regarding hazardous actions by Chinese aircraft since President Ferdinand Marcos Jr assumed office in 2022.
In accordance with a statement issued by the military, two People’s Liberation Army Air Force aircraft engaged in a hazardous maneuver and discharged flares in the path of a NC-212i Philippine air force propeller aircraft during a routine maritime patrol over the Scarborough Shoal. This reckless conduct posed a threat to the lives of Philippine personnel involved in maritime security operations within the country’s maritime zones. Romeo Brawner, chief of the Philippines armed forces, underscored that the actions of the Chinese aircraft not only disrupted lawful flight operations but also contravened international aviation safety regulations.
In response to these incidents, the Chinese embassy in Manila did not immediately provide a comment. The Scarborough Shoal has been a point of contention between the two nations, with Filipino fishermen regularly visiting the area. China’s recent military patrol near the shoal, referred to as Bajo de Masinloc in the Philippines and Huangyan Island in China, has further heightened tensions.
The South China Sea serves as a vital passage for over $3 trillion of annual shipborne trade, with numerous countries, including the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei, asserting claims to parts of the region. Beijing’s extensive claims in the South China Sea have been a subject of dispute, particularly following the 2016 ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague, which rejected China’s claims as lacking a legal basis under international law.
In May, the Philippines accused Chinese fishermen of engaging in destructive practices such as cyanide fishing and the harvesting of protected marine creatures at Scarborough Shoal, allegations that China refuted.
These recent actions by the Chinese air force have sparked concern and drawn condemnation from the Philippines, further exacerbating the already strained relations between the two nations. It is imperative for both parties to engage in constructive dialogue and adhere to international law in resolving maritime disputes. The need to promote peace and stability in the region cannot be overstated.
As tensions continue to escalate, it becomes increasingly important for both countries to seek avenues for peaceful resolution and adhere to international laws and norms. The international community will be closely monitoring the developments in the South China Sea, and it is crucial for all parties involved to act responsibly and uphold the principles of international law.
