Denmark, Slovakia, and Latvia Secure Spots in Men’s Hockey Tournament for 2026 Olympics
Denmark, Slovakia, and Latvia have successfully secured their spots in the men’s ice hockey tournament for the upcoming 2026 Milan Olympics, marking the much-anticipated return of NHL players to the international arena. Each nation triumphed in all three of their respective qualification round games, held on home ice, solidifying their advancement. On Sunday, Denmark achieved a decisive 4-1 victory against Norway, Slovakia outperformed Kazakhstan with a score of 3-1, and Latvia dominated France with a 5-2 win.
The qualified teams join a competitive field that already includes the United States, Canada, Sweden, Finland, Czechia, Germany, Switzerland, and the host nation, Italy. A significant concern looms regarding the potential participation of Russia, which is contingent upon decisions from the International Olympic Committee and the International Ice Hockey Federation, given the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Should Russia be barred from competing, Norway would take its place as the highest-ranked second-place finisher from the qualification tournaments held across Europe this past week.
Denmark demonstrated remarkable skill and resourcefulness by enlisting NHL talent, including goaltender Frederik Andersen from the Carolina Hurricanes and forwards Nikolaj Ehlers from the Winnipeg Jets and Lars Eller from the Pittsburgh Penguins. Andersen displayed exceptional prowess in net, stopping 60 of the 64 shots he faced, while both Ehlers and Eller contributed significantly, each notching four points, including a critical assist in the pivotal match against Norway.
Slovakia, aiming to defend the bronze medal it secured at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, accomplished qualification despite the absence of key players such as Juraj Slafkovsky from Montreal, Erik Cernak from Tampa Bay, and Martin Fehervary from Washington. Martin Pospisil of Calgary emerged as a leading scorer with three points in the tournament, while goaltender Samuel Hlavaj, recently signed by Minnesota, made an impressive 65 saves on 70 shots throughout the qualification rounds.
Latvia’s success was underscored by the contributions of Florida defenseman Uvis Balinskis and forward Rodrigo Abols, who both registered four points during the tournament. Goaltender Kristers Gudlevskis, renowned for his performance against Canada during the 2014 Sochi Olympics, showcased his skills by playing all three qualification games and successfully stopping 53 of the 58 shots he faced.
As the anticipation builds for the Olympic Games, these teams have laid a solid foundation for what promises to be a thrilling hockey tournament in Milan.
