Proposal for Permanent Olympic Rings on Eiffel Tower Gains Momentum
A proposal has emerged to maintain a set of Olympic rings on the Eiffel Tower well beyond the conclusion of the Paris Games. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo has expressed her desire to have these rings permanently displayed at this iconic monument, and she enjoys the support of Thomas Bach, the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
According to the media office of the City of Paris, this initiative aims to merge two historically temporary symbols: the eminent Eiffel Tower, constructed in 1889 with the intention of being a temporary installation, and the Olympic rings, which are typically featured only during the duration of the Games. The objective is to cultivate new imagery for Paris that fosters dialogue, peace, and fraternity, celebrating the virtues of effort, unity, and intelligence.
The current Olympic rings, which have decorated the Eiffel Tower since June 7, were designed for temporary exhibitions and are scheduled for removal in mid-September. The City of Paris has acknowledged that these existing rings cannot continue to be displayed in their current form.
In response to the proposal, the IOC has initiated a feasibility study regarding the future installation of Olympic rings on the Eiffel Tower, with findings anticipated in the coming months. In a statement issued by the IOC press office, it was conveyed that the organization fully supports the City of Paris in its intentions to extend the legacy of the remarkable Olympic Games of 2024, particularly by facilitating accessibility to the Olympic Rings on the World-renowned Eiffel Tower.
Should the feasibility study yield favorable results, Paris officials are prepared to orchestrate a temporary display of rings on the Pont d’Iéna, the bridge that connects the Eiffel Tower to the Trocadéro. The City of Paris has affirmed its commitment to endorsing any positive initiative that seeks to preserve the spirit of the Olympic Games in the aftermath of the event.
