US Reaffirms Support for Taiwan Amid Prolonged Chinese Military Drills
The United States has reiterated its commitment to peace in the Taiwan Strait amid China’s extended military drills around Taiwan, condemning China’s aggressive actions and affirming support for Taiwan. The PLA conducted drills targeting key facilities, which Taiwan described as “irrational provocations.”
The United States has reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring “peace and stability” in the Taiwan Strait. This statement comes in light of China’s decision to prolong extensive military drills around Taiwan. The US opposes any unilateral changes to the current status through force or coercion.
State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce emphasized that China’s aggressive military activities and rhetoric only heighten tensions and endanger regional security and global prosperity. She reiterated the US commitment to its allies and partners, particularly Taiwan, in the face of Beijing’s “intimidation tactics and destabilizing behavior.”
The drills, named “Strait Thunder-2025A,” were conducted by China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Eastern Theater Command, involving various military branches including the army, navy, and air force. Senior Colonel Shi Yi, a PLA spokesperson, confirmed that “live-fire long-range strike drills” targeted simulated ports and energy facilities, resulting in successful outcomes.
Taiwan’s Defense Ministry reported participation from 71 Chinese aircraft and 21 naval vessels in these exercises, with PLA Navy ships encroaching upon Taiwan’s response zone, including the aircraft carrier Shandong. Taiwan condemned these maneuvers as “irrational provocations” and reiterated its commitment to defending its sovereignty.
