Paris 2024 Paralympics: Evening Highlights from Para Athletics on September 3

The evening of September 3rd at the Paris 2024 Paralympics showcased a remarkable array of para athletic performances, underscored by poignant moments of triumph and disappointment. Notably, Charles-Antoine Kouakou, a distinguished para athlete and advocate for adapted sports in France, faced a challenging race in the T20 400m, where he was unable to defend his Paralympic title secured at the Tokyo 2020 Games. Although he embarked on the race with vigor, Kouakou concluded in eighth place with a time of 49.04 seconds, a stark contrast to his aspirations of medaling.

This event followed merely a week after he had the distinguished honor of lighting the Paralympic Cauldron during the opening ceremony, an emotional milestone that resonated deeply with both him and the audience. The keenly contested race saw Colombia’s Jhon Sebastian Obando Asprilla claim the gold medal with an impressive time of 48.09 seconds, while Spain’s David Jose Pineda Mejia and Mauritius’ Yovanni Philippe secured silver and bronze with times of 48.24 seconds and 48.30 seconds, respectively.

In other events, French athlete Soane Luka Meissonnier, representing Wallis and Futuna, fell short of his expectations in the men’s F20 shot put, finishing fourth with a throw of 16.42 meters, which he regarded as disappointing. The event was dominated by Oleksandr Yarovyi of Ukraine, whose remarkable throw established a new world record at 17.61 meters. Muhammad Ziyad Zolkefli and Maksym Koval followed closely, achieving throws of 17.18 meters and 16.99 meters, respectively.

The T37 long jump saw Valentin Bertrand place ninth with a jump of 5.15 meters, while Brian Lionel Impellizzeri of Italy claimed victory with an impressive leap of 6.42 meters. The evening was also marked by the inspiring performances of young athletes, including 15-year-old Marie N’Goussou, who finished sixth in the T47 100m with a time of 12.58 seconds, and Laure Ustaritz, who placed sixth in the T37 400m final with a time of 1:09.20.

Noteworthy highlights included Lamiya Valiyeva of Azerbaijan achieving a world record time of 11.76 seconds to secure the T13 100m title, while Kimberly Alkmade of the Netherlands set a new Paralympic record of 25.42 seconds in the T64 200m. Ezra French of the United States also distinguished himself by breaking the Paralympic record in the T63 high jump with a height of 1.94 meters, while Jaydin Blackwell, also from the United States, equaled a world record in the T38 400m with a time of 48.49 seconds.

Swiss athlete Marcel Hug encountered a setback in his pursuit of defending his title in the T54 1500m, ultimately earning a silver medal as he was outpaced by China’s Jin Hua.

Overall, the evening was both inspiring and revealing of the fierce competitive spirit within the para athletics community, as athletes not only strived for personal excellence but also contributed to the rich tapestry of the Paralympic Games.
