Former Mayor Alice Guo Arrested in Indonesia Amid Allegations of Criminal Links
Alice Guo, a former mayor from Bamban in the Philippines, has been arrested in Indonesia amid allegations of her involvement with Chinese criminal syndicates. Guo, who possesses dual nationality as Guo Hua Ping, is currently wanted by the Philippine Senate for her absence during an inquiry into her purported connections to organized crime. The Philippine Department of Justice confirmed that she was taken into custody by Indonesian authorities.
The arrest occurred at approximately 11:58 PM on Tuesday in Tangerang City, Jakarta, as reported in Indonesian media. Following her departure from the Philippines in July—first traveling through Malaysia and Singapore—Guo utilized her Philippine passport to enter Indonesia. She is facing serious allegations that include multiple counts of money laundering, where authorities claim she laundered over 100 million pesos (approximately $1.8 million) in illicit funds alongside 35 accomplices.
The investigation into Guo’s activities commenced in May, subsequent to law enforcement operations at a casino in her town, which unveiled scams allegedly linked to her administration. This has led to widespread public outrage, prompting Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to impose a ban on online gaming operators suspected of organized crime connections. The President further asserted an intention to pursue those who assisted in Guo’s evasion of justice.
Justice Secretary Boying Remulla commended the arrest as indicative of the effectiveness of international cooperation and the dedication of Philippine law enforcement in addressing criminal activities. Guo has publicly denied the accusations leveled against her, asserting her rights as a natural-born Philippine citizen.
