China, Tanzania, and Zambia Forge Initial Agreement on Strategic Railway Project

In a significant development for East African infrastructure, China, Tanzania, and Zambia have formalized an initial agreement regarding an important railway project. This agreement, signed in Beijing during the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, aims to enhance the intermodal transportation network, particularly the rail-sea connectivity in the region. The signing ceremony, which took place in the presence of President Xi Jinping, included the participation of the Tanzanian and Zambian presidents, further highlighting the importance of this collaboration.

President Xi Jinping expressed China’s commitment to utilizing this forum as a platform to activate progress in the Tanzania-Zambia railway initiative. He emphasized the goal of improving the rail-sea transport network within East Africa and aspired to establish Tanzania as a model zone for enhancing the quality of cooperation under the China-Africa Belt and Road Initiative.

In support of this endeavor, the World Bank allocated $270 million earlier this year to bolster the connectivity between Tanzania and Zambia, thereby facilitating increased regional trade. A vital artery in this network is the Dar es Salaam corridor, which serves as the primary route for copper exports from the central African Copperbelt. This corridor is managed by the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA), providing an essential alternative to circumvent logistical challenges that have historically hindered copper and cobalt exports from Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo due to inefficiencies in South Africa’s transport links.

This initiative signifies a robust multinational effort to enhance trade and infrastructure, potentially leading to significant economic benefits for the region, as well as a deeper partnership between China and African nations.
