Niger has officially terminated diplomatic relations with Ukraine, a decision that underscores the increasing polarization among certain West African nations and Kyiv.

The military government of Niger declared that it had chosen to sever ties with Ukraine in “solidarity” with neighboring Mali, which had similarly ended its relations with Ukraine just two days prior. The reason for the severed ties stemmed from recent comments by a Ukrainian military official suggesting that Ukraine played a role in the killing of numerous Malian soldiers last month.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has spilled over into Africa, as Ukraine seeks to build alliances on the continent as a counter to Russia’s growing influence. This development coincides with Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso undergoing coups and turning away from defense agreements with France and the US in favor of military support from Russia.

The situation has escalated with Senegal also condemning Ukraine over its alleged support for the attack in Mali. While the Ukrainian foreign ministry has not yet responded to Niger’s decision to sever diplomatic ties, it has criticized Mali’s decision as “short-sighted and hasty” and emphasized Ukraine’s adherence to international law.

Russia, on the other hand, has accused Ukraine of opening a “second front” in Africa and catering to terrorist groups in countries friendly to Moscow. Meanwhile, Ukrainian foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba is currently on his fourth visit to Africa in the last two years as tensions continue to unfold.

The impact of the Ukraine-Russia conflict extends beyond West Africa, reaching Sudan where the Wagner group is purportedly supporting paramilitary forces in their conflict with the Sudanese army. There are videos circulating that allegedly show Ukrainian special forces carrying out drone strikes and armed attacks against the paramilitary forces.

The influence of the Russia-Ukraine war on Africa was evident as more than 70 mourners gathered in Moscow to pay homage to the Wagner fighters killed in the recent attack in Mali.

Moving Forward

The developments in Niger and Mali have raised questions about whether other West African countries will follow suit in severing ties with Ukraine. Burkina Faso, which has aligned with Niger and Mali and is also under military rule, will be closely monitored for its reaction.
