China, Tanzania, and Zambia Forge Initial Agreement to Enhance Railway Project

On Wednesday, an initial agreement was signed among China, Tanzania, and Zambia regarding a significant railway project intended to enhance the rail-sea intermodal transportation infrastructure in East Africa. This pivotal event took place in Beijing, with President Xi Jinping observing the signing of the memorandum of understanding, which was conducted in the presence of the Tanzanian and Zambian presidents attending the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, as reported by state-run broadcaster CCTV.

President Xi expressed, “China is willing to utilize this summit as an opportunity to catalyze new advancements in activating the Tanzania-Zambia railway, collaborate to enhance the rail-sea intermodal transport network in East Africa, and transform Tanzania into a model zone for strengthening high-quality China-Africa Belt and Road cooperation.” Additionally, the World Bank had previously granted $270 million in financing aimed at improving connectivity between Tanzania and Zambia to facilitate regional trade.

The Dar es Salaam corridor, which connects Tanzania and Zambia, serves as a crucial pathway for copper exports originating from the central African Copperbelt region. This corridor is managed by the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) and presents an alternative route to circumvent logistical difficulties in South Africa that have impeded the export of copper and cobalt from Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This new cooperation is expected to significantly enhance trade and transportation efficiency in the region.
