We Are Pi Unveils Trailer for Inspiring Documentary ‘Crois Pas Qu’on Dort’ Ahead of Paris 2024 Olympics

We Are Pi is set to unveil the trailer for “Crois Pas Qu’on Dort” (translated as “Don’t Think We’re Sleeping”), an inspiring documentary film that chronicles the journeys of three young French athletes as they prepare for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics. Scheduled for its premiere in mid-January 2025, followed by theatrical release at the end of the same month, this 90-minute feature is produced in French with the backing of Nike.

The film features three compelling protagonists: Charles-Antoine, a runner with an intellectual disability who proudly secured a Gold medal at the Tokyo Paralympics and aims to compete again; and Leyna and Maysane, twin sisters from a Laotian-Algerian taekwondo dynasty, who are determined to showcase their skills at the Paris 2024 event, coached by their father.

The production, which commenced in 2017, meticulously followed the athletes over a span of five years, capturing their day-to-day experiences and highlighting the challenges they face. This approach presents a unique juxtaposition of the athletes’ intimate lives against the backdrop of their grand sporting ambitions, ultimately culminating in their appearances at the Olympic Games.

Designed to inspire a new generation of athletes in France, “Crois Pas Qu’on Dort” aims to illustrate the transformative impact of sports through the personal narratives of its protagonists. With nearly two years dedicated to a thorough casting process that reviewed approximately 500 athlete profiles, the film’s directors, Nick Walters and Lou Marillier, have remained exceptionally attuned to the subjects’ lives throughout their incredible journeys.

Filmed across twelve countries and supported by a diverse production team of over 250 individuals, the undertaking notably includes efforts to recruit and nurture under-represented filmmakers through the “Crois Pas Qu’on Dort Pledge” initiative. This project endeavors to foster inclusive talent within the film industry, ensuring representation mirrors the experiencing communities.

The directors commented on their vision, stating, “We aimed to narrate a coming-of-age story through the lens of sport that dramatizes the profound, subjective experiences faced by Leyna, Maysane, and Charles-Antoine. The unfiltered access we were granted has enabled us to authentically portray their journeys, which we hope resonates with a broader audience.”

In collaboration with SRAB Films, known for their Palme d’Or-winning production of the film “Les Misérables,” the project also promises a dynamic soundtrack, highlighted by an exclusive original track from renowned French hip-hop artist Tiakola. He expressed the parallel he sees between achieving elite success in sports and music, noting that determination is key to reaching the pinnacle of success.

As stated by Alex Bennett-Grant, the founder of We Are Pi and Executive Producer, “This project represents the most significant narrative we have ever pursued, emphasizing hope for underrepresented individuals and showcasing the unifying power of sport. Throughout our seven-year journey from conception to release, we have forged deep, trusting relationships with our dedicated cast, directors, and producers. Our partner Nike has been instrumental, allowing us the creative freedom to authentically tell these vital stories.”

With its electrifying premiere set for La Grand Rex cinema in Paris, followed by a two-day release into French cinemas, “Crois Pas Qu’on Dort” is poised to resonate with audiences, reinforcing the narrative that anyone can overcome barriers to achieve greatness through sport.
