The Group of Seven (G7) foreign ministers have articulated their concerns regarding China’s military maneuvers near Taiwan through a formal joint statement reported by News.Az via TASS. The statement, which appeared on the website of Britain’s Foreign Office, highlights the G7 countries’ apprehension about the increasing tension from China’s significant military drills in the vicinity of Taiwan.

The G7 ministers, comprising representatives from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union, expressed that such provocative military actions by China pose a risk to global security and stability. They assert the importance of maintaining peace and oppose any unilateral efforts to disrupt this equilibrium, including through coercive actions.

Notably, on April 1 and 2, China conducted substantial military exercises, which included the firing of long-range artillery and simulated strikes on critical infrastructure such as ports and energy facilities. These drills involved the aircraft carrier Shandong off Taiwan’s coast.

Taiwan has functioned under its own government since 1949 when the Kuomintang, led by Chiang Kai-shek, retreated there after losing the civil war. While Taiwan maintains the symbols of the former Republic of China, the People’s Republic of China views it as part of its territory. Recent tensions between Beijing and Taipei have escalated significantly, exacerbating the regional situation.
