Paris 2024 Paralympics Day 8: India Achieves Historic Medal Count, China Leads the Tally
On Day 8 of the Paris 2024 Paralympics, India remains in the 13th position on the medals table, having secured a total of 24 medals thus far, including 5 gold, 9 silver, and 10 bronze. The Games officially began with the opening ceremony on August 28, 2024, and the competitions commenced the following day, concluding on September 8.
The People’s Republic of China continues to dominate the standings with an impressive 145 medals, of which 64 are gold. Great Britain follows in second place with 77 total medals, while the United States occupies the third position with 69 medals, comprising 26 golds.
India has achieved its highest medal tally at a single edition of the Paralympics, highlighted by notable performances. Harvinder Singh made history by winning the first-ever gold for India in para archery, decisively defeating Poland’s Lukasz Ciszek in the men’s individual recurve open final with a score of 6-0. This remarkable victory marked Singh’s second consecutive medal at the Paralympic Games.
In another landmark achievement, Dharambir set an Asian record in the men’s club throw F51 final with a throw of 34.92m, contributing to India’s fifth gold medal in various events. Meanwhile, Pranav Soorma earned a silver medal in the same event with a throw of 34.59m. Sachin Khilari also secured a silver in the men’s shot put F46 final with a throw of 16.32m.
On September 3, both Sharad Kumar and Mariyappan Thangavelu triumphed in the men’s high jump T63, winning silver and bronze medals, respectively. Additionally, Ajeet Singh and Sundar Singh Gurjar earned silver and bronze medals in the men’s javelin F46 event, while Deepthi Jeevanji claimed a bronze in the women’s 400m T20.
Notably, Sumit Antil excelled in the men’s javelin throw F64, setting a new Paralympic record with a remarkable throw of 70.59m, which accounted for India’s third gold medal. Furthermore, Nitesh Kumar won gold in para badminton men’s singles SL3, and Thulasimathi Murugesan and Manisha Ramadass brought home silver and bronze medals, respectively, in the women’s singles SU5 event. Nithya Sre also clinched bronze in the women’s singles SH6 category, enhancing India’s medal tally to 15.
India’s eighth medal on Day 8 was won by Yogesh Kathuniya, who achieved a silver in the men’s discus F56 final. Indian para archers Sheetal Devi and Rakesh Kumar added another bronze medal to the country’s haul after defeating Italy’s Eleonora Sarti and Matteo Bonacina in a closely contested match.
Other medal winners included Nishad Kumar, who finished second in the men’s high jump T47 final, and Preethi Pal, who won a bronze in the women’s 200m T35 event. Additionally, India secured four medals in shooting, with Avani Lekhara winning gold and Mona Agarwal taking bronze in the women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1 category. Manish Narwal represented India proudly, bringing home silver in the men’s 10m air pistol SH1, while Rubina Francis won bronze in the P2 Women’s 10m Air Pistol SH1.
