India Achieves Remarkable Milestone at Paris 2024 Paralympics, Remains 13th in Medal Tally

As the Paris 2024 Paralympics progresses, Day 8 has seen India maintaining its position at 13th in the medal tally, having accumulated a total of 24 medals composed of five gold, nine silver, and ten bronze. China remains at the forefront of the competition with an impressive total of 145 medals, including 64 golds, followed by Great Britain and the USA, which hold the second and third spots respectively.

Since the commencement of the Games on August 28, which featured its official opening ceremony, athletes have been vying for honors across an extensive array of events concluding on September 8.

In a remarkable achievement for India, Harvinder Singh secured a milestone gold medal in para archery, marking the nation’s first-ever victory in this category at the Paralympic Games, after defeating Poland’s Lukasz Ciszek decisively with a score of 6-0 in the men’s individual recurve open final. Additionally, Dharambir set an Asian record of 34.92 meters in the men’s club throw F51 final, contributing further to India’s medal collection alongside Pranav Soorma, who earned a silver medal with a throw of 34.59 meters.

Other notable performances included Sachin Khilari earning silver in the men’s shot put F46 event with a throw of 16.32 meters, while Sharad Kumar and Mariyappan Thangavelu captured silver and bronze respectively in the men’s high jump T63 event. Furthermore, Ajeet Singh claimed silver in the men’s javelin F46 competition while Sundar Singh Gurjar secured the bronze medal. In track events, Deepthi Jeevanji added a bronze in the women’s 400m T20 event to India’s tally.

Sumit Antil achieved a Paralympic record with a gold in the men’s javelin throw F64, recording a throw of 70.59 meters. Meanwhile, in para badminton, Nitesh Kumar triumphed in the men’s singles SL3, with Thulasimathi Murugesan and Manisha Ramadass earning silver and bronze respectively in the women’s singles SU5 category. Nithya Sre also secured a bronze in the women’s singles SH6 category.

Further contributing to India’s coordinate achievements, Yogesh Kathuniya won silver in the men’s discus F56 final. In archery, the duo of Sheetal Devi and Rakesh Kumar prevailed over their Italian competitors, claiming bronze in the mixed team recurve open match. Nishad Kumar excelled in the men’s high jump T47, securing a silver medal, while Preethi Pal won a bronze in the women’s 200m T35 event.

India’s success in shooting events is also notable, with Avani Lekhara winning gold and Mona Agarwal clinching bronze in the women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1 event. Manish Narwal garnered silver in the men’s 10m air pistol SH1, while Rubina Francis completed the shooting medal tally with a bronze in the P2 Women’s 10m Air Pistol SH1 event.

The Paris 2024 Paralympics feature 4,400 athletes from numerous countries participating in 549 events across 22 sports, symbolizing the spirit of inclusivity and competitive excellence. The current medal standings are as follows:
