Japan and Turkey Triumph in Goalball at the Paris 2024 Paralympics
At the Paris 2024 Paralympics, Japan and Turkey achieved remarkable victories in the goalball events, securing gold medals in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively. On Thursday, Japan clinched its inaugural gold medal in the men’s goalball competition, triumphing over Ukraine with a score of four to three in a gripping match that culminated in a golden goal by Sano Yuto. This achievement marks a significant improvement from Japan’s fifth-place finish at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, demonstrating their growth and resilience in the sport.
The thrilling contest took place at the South Paris Arena, where Japan initially established a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Kazuya Kaneko and Koji Miyajiki within the first three minutes. However, Ukraine responded strongly, equalizing the score at the break with goals from Anton Strelchyk and Vasyl Oliinyk. The second period saw Japan momentarily reclaim the lead through Yuto’s powerful throw, bringing the score to 3-2. Despite Japan’s solid defensive performance, Ukraine managed to tie the game again late in the match, leading to a tense extra time. Sano Yuto’s decisive golden goal ultimately secured Japan’s historic victory as the match ended 4-3.
In the women’s category, Turkey defended its title with an impressive 8-3 victory over Israel, achieving gold for the third consecutive time. The Turkish team, which had previously triumphed at the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Games, showcased their dominance in the tournament. Sevda Altunoluk, a prominent member of the Turkish squad, expressed her overwhelming joy, stating, “Three finals, three championships, three gold medals. I cannot describe my happiness; it is a profoundly deep feeling.”
The match commenced with a stellar performance from Turkey, as they raced to a 2-0 lead within the first two minutes, driven by goals from Altunoluk and Fatma Gul Guler. Following a timeout called by Israel, they managed to reduce the deficit, but Turkey quickly reestablished control, extending their lead to 7-2 by halftime. Despite a final effort from Israel’s Lihi Ben David, who scored three times during the match, Turkey maintained its lead, ultimately securing the gold medal. Altunoluk concluded the match as the top scorer, having netted four goals, bringing her total to 21 throughout the tournament.
In the bronze medal matches, China’s women convincingly defeated Brazil with a score of 6-0, while the men’s bronze saw Brazil overcoming their Chinese counterparts with a 5-3 victory.
