JD Sanchez Emerges As Top Qualifier in Men’s Vert Open at World Skate Games Italia 2024

In a remarkable display of talent and poise, 15-year-old JD Sanchez of the United States achieved the top position during the men’s vertical skateboarding open qualifiers at the World Skate Games Italia 2024, held on September 6. Sanchez made an impressive entrance in the final heat of the event, vigorously demonstrating his skills as he dropped into the ramp amidst the waning light of day. He commenced his performance with an outstanding score of 89.75, which he subsequently improved upon with a second run that garnered a score of 90.41, thereby securing his status as the top qualifier for the subsequent finals.

Following closely behind Sanchez was the talented Brazilian skateboarder Gui Khury, also aged 15, who is celebrated for his unprecedented accomplishment of executing the first-ever 1080 on a vert ramp. Competing in the event’s initial heat, Khury exhibited a diverse array of tricks, including a 900 and a 720, which culminated in a commendable score of 89.39, ensuring his qualification for the World Championship finals tomorrow.

The third position was claimed by Augusto Akio, who recently earned a bronze medal in park skateboarding at the Olympics. Akio captivated the audience at Terrazza del Pincio with his unique preparation methods, including balancing his skateboard on his chin prior to his performances. His innovative approach to maneuvering the ramp and its features impressed the judges, resulting in a score of 86.62.

The American contingent featured several other formidable competitors, with Reef Orlando, Mitchie Brusco, and Colin Graham successfully qualifying for the finals. The Brazilian representative Rony Gomes joined his compatriots Akio and Khury, while the final spot was clinched by Inomata Soya, a 14-year-old competitor from Japan.

The vertical skateboarding contests at the World Skate Games Italia 2024 will reach their conclusion tomorrow, with both men’s and women’s finals set to take place.
