In a significant development reflecting the strengthening military ties between China and Cambodia, the Cambodian defense ministry has announced that China will supply two warships to Cambodia. This arrangement comes amidst growing scrutiny over the Ream naval base, which has raised concerns within the United States regarding potential exclusive Chinese use of the facility that it has financed.

Maly Socheata, a spokesperson for Cambodia’s defense ministry, articulated that the provision of these vessels follows a formal request from Cambodia for support from China. The ships are anticipated to be delivered as soon as the forthcoming year. Ms. Socheata emphasized that this collaboration aims to enhance Cambodia’s capacity to safeguard and maintain peace, stability, and security within its borders. Furthermore, she remarked that the warships would facilitate search and rescue operations as well as various humanitarian initiatives.
