In a remarkable display of athleticism, Indian athlete Simran secured a bronze medal in the women’s 200m T12 final at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, achieving a personal best of 24.75 seconds while aided by her guide, Abhay Singh. The T12 classification is specifically designed for runners with visual impairments, necessitating the assistance of a guide throughout the event.
The event witnessed Cuba’s Omara Durand claiming her third gold medal of the Olympics, having previously won gold in both the 100m and 400m events. Durand completed the 200m race with an impressive time of 23.62 seconds. The silver medal was earned by Venezuela’s Alejandra Pérez, who finished the track in 24.19 seconds.
Simran’s performance was particularly noteworthy, having initially surpassed the 25-second mark in both her heats and semi-finals. However, she reserved her finest performance for the final, marking her debut Paralympic medal. This achievement represents a significant milestone, as it is India’s first medal in the T12 category and the fourth overall in track events throughout the history of the Paralympics, all of which have been obtained in this ongoing edition.
The Indian contingent in athletics has seen other notable accomplishments as well. Preethi Pal made history by becoming the first Indian female athlete to earn a Paralympic medal in track events, winning bronze in the women’s 100m T35 and subsequently adding another bronze in the 200m T35 category. Additionally, Deepthi Jeevanji contributed to this success by securing a bronze in the women’s 400m T20.
