Rayane Soares Sets New World Record at Paris 2024 Paralympics

In a remarkable display of athletic prowess, Brazilian sprinter Rayane Soares achieved a historic feat at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, breaking Marla Runyan’s longstanding world record in the women’s 400m T13 event. Competing at the esteemed Stade de France on September 7, 2024, Soares’s time of 53.55 seconds not only secured her Paralympic gold but also surpassed the previous record of 54.46 seconds that Runyan established over two decades ago in January 1995.

Marla Runyan, an iconic figure in Para athletics, is celebrated for her illustrious career, which includes five Paralympic gold medals and participation in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, where she achieved eighth place in the women’s 1500m final. The dramatic moment of record-setting unfolded during the final morning session of the Games, highlighting the immense talent and dedication of Soares.

Expressing her emotions after the victory, Soares remarked, “I had trust in myself that I could finish in a good time – that is what I’ve trained for. To get this result in a competition, at the Paralympics, that is what has surprised me, due to all the anxiety and fear that I feel.” She further elaborated on her apprehensions regarding being assigned lane eight for the race, stating, “I was nervous, my heart was beating fast.”

The session also featured an impressive performance from Uzbekistan’s Nurkhon Kurbanova, who claimed gold in the women’s javelin F54, alongside James Turner of Australia, who redeemed his earlier Tokyo experience by setting a new Paralympic record in the men’s 100m T36. Additionally, Lara Baars from the Netherlands emerged as a first-time Paralympic champion in the women’s shot put F40, where she established a new Paralympic record with a throw of 9.10 meters.
