Venezuelan Forces Encircle Embassy Providing Asylum to Opposition Members
Venezuelan government forces have initiated a perimeter blockade around the Argentine embassy located in Caracas, which is currently providing refuge to several political figures opposing President Nicolás Maduro. Members of the opposition have disseminated images and videos illustrating the presence of officers from the Venezuelan intelligence service surrounding the embassy grounds. Individuals within the embassy claim to be enduring a state of “siege” imposed by the Maduro regime.
Following a diplomatic breakdown over the Venezuelan presidential election results, the Argentine embassy, alongside Argentine interests in Venezuela, is being represented by Brazil. Recent developments saw the Venezuelan government revoke Brazil’s custodianship of the embassy, a move interpreted as an effort to diminish its diplomatic protection.
Argentina, among a coalition of nations that disputed the legitimacy of the presidential election, has voiced concerns regarding the government’s refusal to disclose voting data. While countries such as Russia and China have acknowledged Maduro’s re-election, the Venezuelan opposition asserts that their candidate, Edmundo González, was the true victor—an assertion not yet recognized by Western nations.
Tensions escalated further on Friday as two additional opposition members joined four others already taking refuge in the embassy. This occurred shortly after the Argentine foreign ministry announced intentions to request the International Criminal Court to issue arrest warrants for Mr. Maduro and key officials of his administration.
Pedro Urruchurtu Noselli, an aide to opposition leader María Corina Machado, indicated on social media that the situation had become increasingly dire, with an uptick in the presence of masked officials. “Traffic on the street has been restricted. We remain without electricity,” he reported. Omar Gonzalez Moreno, another opposition representative, confirmed that the embassy has been deprived of electrical power since the previous evening. He condemned the ongoing threat posed by Maduro’s security forces against Argentine diplomatic premises.
In response to the situation, the Venezuelan government justified its actions by alleging the discovery of evidence suggesting the use of the embassy for plotting terrorist acts and attempts on the lives of Maduro and his deputy. Brazil has reiterated its commitment to protecting the inviolability of the Argentine diplomatic mission until a suitable government can be appointed to undertake such responsibilities. Argentine Security Minister Patricia Bullrich affirmed, “We Argentines are resolute in our commitment to prevent any interference with our embassy.”
