India Achieves Historic Success at Paris Paralympics 2024 with 29 Medals
India concluded its participation in the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games with a remarkable total of 29 medals, earning seven gold, nine silver, and 13 bronze. Pooja Ojha represented the final participation for India in the Games on Sunday, where she unfortunately did not qualify for the women’s kayak 200m final, marking the end of India’s campaign. With this medal tally, India achieved its most successful performance at the Paralympics to date, securing the 18th position in the overall standings.
In contrast, Pakistan, also competing at the event, finished in a disappointing joint-last place at the 79th rank, managing only a solitary bronze medal. India’s performance included notable victories over several top-ranked nations, including Switzerland, Belgium, South Korea, Turkey, and Argentina, allowing it to place among the top 20 countries in the global standings.
Traditionally dominant countries in the Paralympics, such as China, Great Britain, the United States, and Italy, continued to excel, locking their positions among the top ten nations. India’s encouraging performance in Paris has set high expectations for an even more successful outcome in the upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Paralympic Games.
India’s final medal of the Games was secured by Navdeep Singh, who triumphed in the men’s javelin throw F41 classification, achieving gold with a throw of 47.32 meters. Initially awarded a silver place, Navdeep’s accomplishment was elevated to gold following the disqualification of Iranian competitor Sadegh Beit Sayah due to inappropriate conduct during the event, which violated International Paralympic Committee rules against political gestures in competition.
In addition to Navdeep’s success, the female athlete Simran, accompanied by her guide Abhay Singh, achieved an impressive personal best of 24.75 seconds in the women’s 200m (T12) event, winning a bronze medal. Simran, a visually impaired athlete, is the reigning world champion in this category and had previously finished fourth in the 100m event at the Paris Paralympics. This success served as a redeeming moment for her after a challenging Games.
Athletics has been a significant contributor to India’s medal haul, accounting for 17 of the 29 medals, including four golds. At the end of these Games, India was ranked 15th overall, while China dominated the medal standings with an astounding 208 total medals, including 90 gold.
Navdeep’s gold medal provides solace after the disappointment of a fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Paralympics, while he continues to showcase his prowess as a prominent athlete since taking up the sport in 2017. He has achieved multiple accolades at the national level, including a bronze at the para-world championships earlier this year.
Conversely, Simran, who has already achieved multiple silver medals at the Asian Para Games, continues to prove her exceptional talent, having previously claimed three gold medals at the Khelo India Para Games in December of the previous year. Under the guidance of her husband, Naik Gajendra Singh, she has established herself as a formidable competitor in her category.
In summary, India’s commendable performance in the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games reflects the significant progress the nation has made in international para-sport. Looking ahead, all eyes will be on India as it aims to build upon this success in forthcoming tournaments and the next Paralympic Games in Los Angeles.
