Rebecca Cheptegei Remembered at 2024 Paris Paralympics Amidst Calls for Change in Athletes’ Safety
In a poignant tribute during the 2024 Paris Paralympics, the late Ugandan Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei was honored following her untimely demise. Cheptegei tragically passed away due to severe injuries sustained in an attack by her partner, marking yet another alarming incident of violence against female athletes in Uganda.
During the prestigious marathon events held at the Paralympics, a large screen displayed Cheptegei’s image, evoking applause from the audience who remembered the resilience of the 33-year-old runner. This act of remembrance took place mere weeks after she participated in the women’s marathon at the Paris Olympics, where she notably finished 44th among elite competitors.
Hailing from Uganda, Cheptegei succumbed to injuries resulting from a violent assault that occurred in Kenya on August 31, where her partner tragically set her ablaze after pouring petrol on her. This heinous act rendered her with over 75 percent of her body burned and cemented her status as the third female athlete killed in Kenya since October 2021.
In response to this grievous loss, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo announced that a sports facility in the city would be named in Cheptegei’s honor. “Her beauty, strength, and freedom shone brightly here in Paris, and it is those very qualities that ultimately led to her untimely death at the hands of a person who could not tolerate her strength,” remarked Hidalgo during a press conference. She emphasized that Paris is committed to preserving Cheptegei’s legacy to promote the message of equality inherent in the Olympic and Paralympic values.
Furthermore, reactions to Cheptegei’s death echoed throughout the sports community, with Kenyan Sports Minister Kipchumba Murkomen asserting that this tragedy resonated as a significant loss for the entire region. The Chairman of the Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) Athletes Commission, Ganzi Semu Mugula, eloquently stated the critical need for societal change: “This is a pivotal moment—not only to mourn a splendid Olympian but to reaffirm our collective commitment to safeguarding the dignity of every individual.”
With such remarks, the sports community has united in honoring Rebecca Cheptegei’s memory and advocating for a future devoid of violence against women, particularly in the realm of sports.
