U.S. Strikes in Yemen: Reports of Casualties and Conflicting Claims
Suspected U.S. airstrikes in Yemen killed at least four people in Sanaa and two in Saada, according to the Houthis. The strikes have reportedly led to higher casualties than the Houthis acknowledge. President Trump shared a video suggesting a greater impact on Houthi forces, which has not been substantiated by the U.S. military. Discrepancies in reports raise questions about the situation on the ground.
On Sunday, suspected U.S. airstrikes reportedly killed at least four individuals in Sanaa, Yemen’s capital, according to the Houthi-run health ministry. The strikes also injured 16 others when they targeted a residential home. In addition, earlier in the day, the Houthis reported two fatalities and nine injuries from airstrikes in their stronghold of Saada, with video evidence showing an attack on a two-story building.
The ongoing U.S. airstrikes, aimed at countering terrorist actions in the Middle East linked to the Israel-Hamas conflict, have purportedly resulted in a total of 69 fatalities, as claimed by the Houthis, who have notably not reported any losses among their leadership. An online video posted by President Trump raises questions about the accuracy of these casualty guarantees.
In a video shared by President Trump, he presented footage, which he claimed depicted over 70 Houthis preparing for an attack. The video concluded with an explosion that created a substantial crater. Trump remarked, “Oops, there will be no attack by these Houthis! They will never sink our ships again!” However, the U.S. military’s Central Command has not provided specific details regarding these airstrikes that have occurred since mid-March.
The Houthi-controlled SABA news agency reported the airstrike targeted a social visit taking place in Hodeida, although it provided no evidence linking high-ranking officials to the incident. Conversely, Moammar al-Eryani, Yemen’s information minister for the exiled government, alleged that the bombing killed approximately 70 Houthi fighters and Iranian Revolutionary Guard personnel. Furthermore, the Houthis have attacked over 100 merchant vessels, resulting in the sinking of two and the deaths of four sailors between November 2023 and January 2024.
The recent U.S. airstrikes in Yemen have reportedly resulted in fatalities according to Houthi claims, alongside President Trump’s assertions that suggest higher casualty figures. The ongoing operations targeting Houthi forces remain contentious, with both sides providing conflicting reports on the impact of these strikes. As the situation evolves, it is crucial to monitor the developments and verify claims from both the Houthis and the U.S. military.
